Cannabis Costs vs Minimal Benefits

Santa Barbara County uses a unique industry-friendly cannabis tax system that relies on “trust.”  In other Counties (of our state’s 58 Counties, only 19 allow commercial cannabis cultivation), they rely on the number of square feet grown. This system discourages sustainable agriculture and is easy to verify, calculate, and project. In Santa Barbara, we rely on self-reported cash revenue, where 50% of Growers either don’t report or report “zero” revenue for the period in question.  This year, our $1.6B County will collect $6M in Cultivation Tax with a cost to collect of approximately $10M, adding to our budget deficit.

The Coalition advocates, educates and litigates to ensure that the facts about cannabis are understood and that cannabis growers don’t adversely affect our communities. Your donations will help support community outreach, public education, and litigation against cannabis growers to hold growers and local government accountable.
